Teddy - Bearcare:

How might we get new/first time parents engaged in their energy usage in a meaningful way.

There is no doubt that Climate change is now an emergency, as we venture more into our rainforests and exploit our natural resources we are setting ourselves up for a world of more suffering, poverty and inequality. But the onus isn’t just on government. Small changes at the individual level is what will breed the mindset of a truly global response.

There is this notion that climate change is a problem for the future. Staying on this trail of thought I wanted to explore first time parents as a user group as they will be looking into the future with hope and worry

It became clear there is a conflict between wanting to be organised and having the time and energy to create a schedule which is flexible. Modern family’s there could possibly have any number of caregivers for the child and so routine and tracking is vital. When a parent is on leave from work to look after their child, they start to have less interactions with people, friends.

I began diagramming the insights into opportunities for design. I had a process of brainstorming, sketching and working out how they can relate to improving energy usage.

Alexa is something all the parents I talked to used in one way or another, from playing music in the child's room to getting the tv to change channels when the child is feeding and comfortable on their shoulder.

  • There are smart formula making machines which save time on the feeding process.

  • Breastfeeding and bottlefeeding will have vastly different experiences.

  • I found that parents will already log their child's sleep, feeds and nappy changes, what they found valuable is simplicity and big colourful buttons.
